The rise of eco glitter has been a great thing for the beauty and creative industries. More people want sparkle without the environmental cost of traditional plastic glitter.
But there is a growing problem in the market: not every product marketed as “eco glitter,” “bio glitter,” or even “biodegradable glitter” is genuine Bioglitter®.
Some products may be plant-based. Some may be partially improved over conventional glitter. Others may simply use sustainability language that sounds reassuring without offering the documentation customers deserve.
For shoppers, that means one thing: verify what you are buying.
If you are new to the category, start with our What is Bioglitter? guide and Why Bioglitter Is the Gold Standard, or browse our biodegradable glitter collection, and learn how to apply Bioglitter®.
Why this matters
Genuine Bioglitter® was developed as an alternative to conventional plastic glitter. It is based on natural and plant-derived materials rather than plastic, and its environmental claims are supported by recognized testing and certification standards.
Moon Shatter’s biodegradable glitter is made from eucalyptus-derived cellulose, with metallic sparkle created by an ultra-thin reflective aluminium layer over the cellulose film. It is cosmetic grade, which means it is made to a higher standard than craft glitter and is softer on skin than traditional plastic glitter.
That level of transparency is what customers should expect when shopping for eco-friendly glitter.

At first glance, this sounds convincing. The wording includes familiar sustainability language like “eco,” “biodegradable,” “passed SGS,” and “match the EU.”
But when we looked more closely, the claims became much less clear.
The supplier’s public product page says its biodegradable glitter is mainly made from plants such as eucalyptus trees and describes it as compostable, non-toxic, highly reflective, and cosmetic grade. However, the same company also presents itself as a general glitter manufacturer, not a dedicated Bioglitter® source.
More importantly, the exact product composition was not clearly verified. We were not able to find a public ingredient list, INCI declaration, product-specific SDS, detailed heavy metals specification, cosmetic GMP statement, or a product-specific third-party biodegradability certification tied to the exact item in the email.
There was another red flag too: the web address included in the email did not resolve to a functioning product page when checked.
What makes genuine Bioglitter® different
The biggest difference is not just the marketing language. It is the documentation behind the product.
Genuine Bioglitter® is backed by specific product information, controlled trademark use, and recognized biodegradability standards. Official Bioglitter® materials also distinguish between different effect types, including metallic, holographic, and opalescent ranges, so customers and brands can understand exactly what they are buying.
If a seller is offering genuine Bioglitter®, they should be able to identify the product clearly, explain what it is made from, and show why the claims are credible.

“Bio glitter” is not the same as Bioglitter®
“Bio glitter” is often used as a generic marketing phrase. Bioglitter® is a specific trademarked brand.
That means a seller can advertise “bio glitter” or “biodegradable glitter” without actually selling official Bioglitter®.
A product may be plant-based. It may be partially biodegradable. It may be an improvement over traditional glitter. But unless the seller can verify that it is genuine Bioglitter®, customers should not assume it is the same thing.
How to verify a Bioglitter® reseller
If you want to make sure you are buying the real thing, here are the easiest ways to verify a seller before you purchase:
- Check the official Bioglitter® page. Visit the official Bioglitter® overview. Official Bioglitter® materials explain that trusted companies, brands, and retailers are granted permission to use the Bioglitter® logo, making this one of the best places to start verifying approved sellers.
- Look for the official Bioglitter® logo. Check the seller’s website, packaging, and product pages for the authorized logo.
- Ask for product-specific documentation. A trustworthy seller should be able to explain exactly what range they are selling, not just use broad claims like “eco glitter” or “matches EU.”
- Ask what the glitter is made from. The base material should be explained clearly and confidently.
- Check the seller’s website quality. Missing product pages, vague certificates, inconsistent language, and unclear sourcing are all signs that you should look closer.
Frequently asked questions
Is all biodegradable glitter the same as Bioglitter®?
No. “Biodegradable glitter” is a broad product description. Bioglitter® is a specific trademarked brand.
How can I verify a seller is approved?
The best first step is to check the official Bioglitter® page and look for the authorized Bioglitter® logo on the seller’s website or packaging.
Why does the logo matter?
The Bioglitter® logo is used to identify products made with genuine Bioglitter®. If a seller claims to offer Bioglitter® but does not show the official branding or cannot explain their source, ask more questions.
What should I do if I am unsure?
Ask the seller what product range they stock, what the glitter is made from, and whether they are listed or represented through official Bioglitter® channels. You can also shop directly from a specialist retailer like Moon Shatter.
